Introduction to Game Theory
This collection of lecture modules is a MOOC in embryonic form. The content is based on an inter-disciplinary course at the undergrad/mba level that I have taught at the University of Canterbury for 15 years. I think there is a “gap” in the University game theory market for a non mathematical approach to strategic thinking ….and theory . Enjoy.
How does this introductory course compare to Stanford’s coursera courses?
I’d recommend you check out the game theory strategic reasoning course on coursera.org . and Matt Jackson and Co’s amazing game theory courses on their youtube site. The game theory course I teach, Econ 223, isn’t as mathematical as the one taught by the Stanford/UBC guys …on purpose. I want to attract interest from students in many disciplines – ie think interdisciplinary – where math based teaching doesn’t typically occur – history, philosophy, political science, psychology, sociology, english lit (yes!!), management, accountancy , law…- – as well as students from engineering, economics, computer science, biology, math/stats . Game theory and the reasoning processes in it is about life, and should be an integral component of any liberal arts, commerce, law or science degree irrespective of whether you are math phobic. So I designed a course at that non-math level. Actually many majors in econ at my home university take this course along with an upper undergraduate course in game theory much like the coursera one (ie using the language and techniques of mathematics) . They complement one another. One develops examples (stories) and builds concepts useful for understanding the key ideas and themes from game theory, the other adds additional modelling techniques allowing one to “do” game theory.
Edited videos from my past lectures in Introductory Game Theory can also be found on youtube….Google “Econ 223” , or my vimeo site, or for some older material look here on youtube. I am in the process now of making this site, strategicecon.com the “home” for my own edited video clips. Here is a sample edited video.
The editing process takes muchos time….but I plan to get the best of my lectures in this course up and running April 2016 . Enjoy
